Amsterdam Tolerance & Migration

Amsterdam has always been known as a city of freedom. Back in the 17th century Protestants, Catholics and Jews lived together under an official policy of tolerance. On this tour we visit the Holocaust memorial and talk about the resistance during the Nazi-occupation, but also the resistance that wasn’t there, and why it wasn’t there. We visit a market that reflects the multicultural society of Amsterdam today where you can see Turkish bread and Dutch cheese being sold next to exotic fruit from Surinam.
We discuss contemporary issues around migration, fear, and racism while we visit the place where an Islamic fanatic murdered film director Theo van Gogh, great-nephew of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh- in 2003. This terrible event raised a very important question: ‘How tolerant can you be towards intolerance?’

Giving back to amsterdam

By asking communities how our tours can enrich and give back to the places we travel to, we create tours that help preserve the beauty and culture of Amsterdam.

EBERHARDJES FOUNDATION

Every tour is enriched with cookies from the Eberhardjes foundation, they bake heart-shaped cookies that are meant to connect Amsterdammers with each other and spread a message of loving care. Every tour participant gets a cookie for him/herself and one to share with someone on the street.

THE MEEVAART COMMUNITY CENTRE

We work in close collaboration with the community center, the Meevaart, a place where they experiment with original ideas and find new ways for a more harmonious and cohesive modern society.

“With my academic background in law, philosophy and human rights the topic of this tour fits me like a glove. Having worked in refugee law myself  I saw first hand the damage done by anti-migration policy. Living in Amsterdam I’ve also experienced how the city thrives with its diversity, I want to invite people into this amazing multicultural world.”
